Dog Show Handling 101: Lesson One
It has come to my attention that many people out there really don't know where to start. So I started writing on Facebook about where to start and how to start for a friend who has one of my puppies. It was pretty popular idea so I decided to write about it here. Handling 101: Lesson one - Winding up your lead. This should become second nature to you and will only become that way if: 1) you practice every day until it is. Do this while watching TV -- not while it is attached to your dog. 2) Start with a thin show lead. Slip the handle of your lead over your thumb. Then wind it up without winding around your hand…folding it in your hand. When you need more you can easily let it out. Never wind around your hand or your fingers. If a dog really takes off, you could lose a digit or burn the crap out of your hand. I like woven kangaroo leather leads the best - no beads or bangles rolling around as they can be too much bling and detract from your dog and the beads can vibrate confusing your connection with your dog. Every direct command you give your dog will be through that leash, don't confuse your message with a lot of unnecessary verbiage.
